Brazil moves to tighten signaling rules and drop points for illegal parking
Brazilian traffic law requires drivers to signal lane changes and overtaking in advance. Under Article 196 of the Código de Trânsito Brasileiro, failure to use a turn signal or arm gesture is classified as a grave infraction, carrying a fine of R$ 195.23 and five points on the driver's licence (CNH).
A separate legislative proposal seeks to remove the points penalty for violations of the paid‑parking “Zona Azul” system while retaining the monetary fine. The bill would also end vehicle towing for these specific offences, but would keep points for infractions that affect safety, such as illegal parking in disabled spaces or other high‑risk behaviours. The reforms aim to focus the point‑deduction system on dangerous driving rather than purely administrative breaches.
