Brazil municipalities expand selective waste collection initiatives
Municipalities in Brazil are implementing and expanding selective waste collection initiatives to promote environmental sustainability and support local recycling cooperatives.
In Paragominas, the local government is encouraging residents to use Voluntary Delivery Points (PEVs) to dispose of recyclable materials such as paper, metal, glass, and plastic. These materials are sent directly to municipal waste picker cooperatives, aiming to reduce improper waste disposal while generating income for local workers.
In Maceió, the Municipal Authority for Sustainable Development and Urban Cleaning (Alurb), in partnership with the Cooplum cooperative, managed selective collection during the ninth edition of the Circuito Permanente Run. The initiative resulted in the collection of over 600 kilograms of recyclables, including PET bottles, cardboard, and plastic cups, preventing waste from reaching local beaches and rivers while providing extra income for participating families.
