Brazil Names Its Section of Brazil‑Paraguay Bioceanic Bridge After Heitor Miranda

The Brazilian Chamber of Deputies approved Project Law 780/23, officially naming the Brazilian segment of the Rio Paraguai bridge “Ponte Heitor Miranda dos Santos.” The legislation now proceeds to the Senate.

The bridge links Porto Murtinho in Mato Grosso do Sul with Carmelo Peralta in Paraguay and is the key crossing of the proposed Bioceanic Corridor, a trade route that would connect Brazil’s interior to Pacific ports in Chile via Paraguay and Argentina. When completed, the corridor could cut roughly 2,000 km from transport routes for soy, corn, beef and cellulose, lowering costs for the agribusiness sector.

Construction of the 1.29‑km bridge is in its final stage, with fewer than 21 m of structure remaining. Funding has been supported in part by revenues from the Itaipu hydroelectric plant. Once operational, the bridge is expected to enhance regional logistics and competitiveness of Brazilian exports.
