Brazil nears position as world's largest agricultural exporter

Brazil is positioned to surpass the United States as the world’s largest agricultural exporter. While U.S. producers exported $171 billion in 2025, Brazil’s exports were nearly identical at $169 billion. Projections for 2026 suggest Brazil could reach $180 billion, potentially overtaking the $177.5 billion projected for the U.S.

This shift is attributed to decades of technological investment and productivity gains driven by research institutions like Embrapa. Geopolitical factors have also played a role; trade disputes between the U.S. and China have encouraged China to reduce its reliance on American suppliers in favor of Brazilian products. Additionally, global disruptions such as African swine fever in China and the Russia-Ukraine war have created market openings that Brazil has filled through its leadership in soybean, coffee, sugar, and beef exports.

In the context of these shifting markets, export parity serves as a critical mechanism for determining domestic commodity prices. This concept links local prices to international markets by calculating the maximum price a trader can pay a producer while maintaining profitability after accounting for international values, export premiums, exchange rates, freight, and storage costs.
