Brazil neonatal units introduce humanizing projects for newborns

In Porto Velho, Rondônia, the Hospital de Base Dr. Ary Pinheiro began the “Amor em Fotos” project, providing professional photo sessions for newborns admitted to its neonatal ward. The initiative, launched by the state health secretariat, aims to create lasting memories for families and strengthen emotional bonds. Governor Marcos Rocha emphasized the effort, saying, “We have invested and worked to develop actions that make care more humane and strengthen the link between patients, their families and health teams.” Families, such as mother Maysa Silva, praised the service, noting the photos will “forever keep the story of my daughter.”

Meanwhile, at the Maternidade Regional de Camaçari in Bahia, staff dressed newborns in World Cup‑themed accessories to celebrate Brazil’s tournament participation while promoting a caring atmosphere. Mother Jaci Santos Santana described the experience as “remarkable,” highlighting how the festive touch brought lightness to families during a vulnerable time. Both projects reflect the SUS’s broader humanization agenda, which seeks empathetic, dignified care for patients and their relatives.
