Brazil observes National Week of Intellectual and Multiple Disabilities

Brazil is observing the National Week of Intellectual and Multiple Disabilities from August 21 to 28. Established by Law No. 13.585 in 2017, the week aims to promote social inclusion, guarantee rights, and combat stereotypes regarding people with intellectual and multiple disabilities.

Various regional activities are being held across the country to mark the occasion. In Chapadão do Sul, APAE students participated in a municipal legislative session to advocate for the 2026 campaign theme: ‘Disability does not define. Opportunity transforms. Include our voice!’. In Canela, the week opened with lectures on accessibility and rights. In Marabá, the APAE organized community events to stimulate public policies and combat discrimination. Meanwhile, in Palotina, the programming includes workshops, sports, and talent shows to foster integration and respect.

The national campaign, led by APAE Brasil, emphasizes the importance of recognizing people with disabilities as protagonists of their own lives and calls for active listening from families, professionals, and public managers.
