Brazil observes National Week of Persons with Intellectual and Multiple Disabilities
Brazil is observing the National Week of Persons with Intellectual and Multiple Disabilities, held annually from August 21 to 28. Established by Law No. 13,585/2017 and promoted by the National Federation of Apaes (Fenapaes), the week aims to promote social inclusion and combat discrimination.
The 2026 campaign theme, “Disability does not define. Opportunity transforms. Include our voice!”, focuses on the agency of people with disabilities. The initiative seeks to sensitize the government and society regarding the specific needs of this group and the necessity of effective public policies.
In Altamira, local activities included an inclusive walk to raise awareness about rights and accessibility. Participants, including families and public servants, marched to advocate for the principle of “Nothing about us without us,” emphasizing that people with disabilities must have a voice in the decisions and policies that affect their lives.
