Brazil observes regional holidays on September 15 and 16

Several regions in Brazil will observe local holidays on September 15 and 16, though neither date is a national holiday.

On September 15, at least 21 cities will observe municipal holidays. Many of these observances are driven by religious devotion to Nossa Senhora das Dores, affecting locations such as Caruaru in Pernambuco, Juazeiro do Norte in Ceará, and Mantenópolis in Espírito Santo. Other cities, including Ponta Grossa in Paraná and Avaré in São Paulo, will observe holidays marking their municipal emancipation anniversaries. In these areas, public offices, schools, and banks may close, while essential services like health and security remain operational.

On September 16, Alagoas will observe a state holiday to commemorate its 209th anniversary of political emancipation from Pernambuco. This holiday affects 102 municipalities, including the capital, Maceió. While public administration and banks may alter their in-person service hours, digital banking services remain available. Additionally, the municipality of Cariré in Ceará will also celebrate its emancipation on this date.
