Brazil observes Setembro Amarelo for suicide prevention

September is recognized in Brazil as 'Setembro Amarelo', a month dedicated to suicide prevention awareness. To mark the campaign, landmarks such as Christ the Redeemer and the National Congress have been illuminated in yellow. According to the World Health Organization, Brazil experiences approximately 32 suicides per day, a figure that exceeds deaths from AIDS and cancer.

The campaign, which originated from the story of Mike Emme in the United States, aims to break taboos through the slogan ‘Talking is the best solution’. Advocates believe that increasing awareness can prevent 9 out of 10 suicide attempts by helping to identify those in need.

In the corporate sector, experts warn that companies must avoid treating the cause as a mere calendar event. Psychologist Karen Scavacini emphasizes that prevention should be integrated into organizational culture rather than being limited to generic slogans or isolated lectures. Effective corporate action requires technical knowledge, safe language, and continuous support structures rather than one-off campaigns.
