Brazil orders extradition of ex‑deputy Carla Zambelli from Italy

Supreme Court minister Alexandre de Moraes instructed Brazil's Justice and Foreign Ministries to complete the extradition of former federal deputy Carla Zambelli, who is currently detained in Italy. The Italian Court of Appeal in Rome has already authorized her surrender in two cases: illegal possession of a firearm and a cyber‑invasion of the National Council of Justice (CNJ) system that led to a fabricated arrest warrant against Moraes. Zambelli was sentenced by Brazil's Supreme Federal Court to ten years in prison for the CNJ invasion and received an additional term for the armed pursuit incident. All guarantees requested by the Rome court – including protection against the death penalty, life imprisonment, and cruel treatment – have been sent to Italian authorities. Upon return, she will be placed in the Federal District women's prison (the “Colmeia”). Zambelli fled Brazil in 2023, first to the United States and then to Italy, relying on her Italian citizenship to avoid Brazilian sanctions.
