Brazil organ donation awareness campaign highlights transplant waiting lists
During the ‘Setembro Verde’ awareness month, Brazilian healthcare institutions are highlighting the critical need for organ and tissue donation. Data from the Associação Brasileira de Transplante de Órgãos (ABTO) indicates that 73,877 people were on transplant waiting lists in Brazil in 2025, with kidney transplants accounting for 53% of the demand.
Pediatric transplants face unique challenges. According to the Registro Brasileiro de Transplantes (RBT), 50 children died while waiting for transplants in 2025. The number of pediatric donors has also declined, falling from 274 in 2023 to 211 in 2025. Medical professionals, including those at Hospital Pequeno Príncipe, emphasize that finding organs compatible with a child's size is a significant hurdle.
A major obstacle to increasing donation rates is family refusal, which occurs in approximately 45% of cases. Health officials and hospitals are urging citizens to discuss their wishes with their families to ensure their intentions are honored and to help reduce the number of refusals.
