Brazil: Over 15 million people living with rheumatic diseases

More than 15 million Brazilians are living with rheumatic diseases, according to data from the Brazilian Society of Rheumatology (SBR). These conditions encompass over 120 different ailments that can affect bones, joints, muscles, tendons, ligaments, and cartilage, and in some instances, internal organs such as the kidneys, heart, lungs, and eyes.

Commonly known as rheumatism, these diseases include osteoarthritis, gout, tendinitis, bursitis, rheumatoid arthritis, lupus, fibromyalgia, and osteoporosis. While some conditions are more frequent among the elderly, they can affect individuals of all ages, including children.

Medical specialists emphasize the importance of early diagnosis and proper treatment to mitigate physical limitations and social or professional impacts. Common symptoms include joint pain, swelling, redness, increased temperature in affected areas, and stiffness, particularly upon waking. Because many symptoms lack visible signs, patients often face challenges with social understanding and may experience difficulties in the workplace.
