Brazil: Over 330,000 children hospitalized due to falls in a decade

Data from the Brazilian Society of Pediatrics (SBP), based on Unified Health System (SUS) hospital records, reveals that more than 330,000 children under the age of 10 were hospitalized due to falls between 2016 and 2025. This represents an average of 33,000 hospitalizations per year. In the first half of 2026 alone, nearly 15,000 children were hospitalized for similar accidents.

The highest concentration of cases occurred in the 5 to 9 age group, accounting for 193,800 hospitalizations. The 1 to 4 age group saw 110,100 cases, while infants under one year old totaled 26,700, with 3,700 of those involving falls from beds.

Geographically, São Paulo recorded the highest number of hospitalizations with 71,700 cases, followed by Minas Gerais with 33,400 and Bahia with 27,200. The SBP emphasizes that most of these accidents are preventable through age-appropriate safety measures, such as installing window screens, supervising play, and using protective equipment for scooters and bicycles.
