Brazil campaign finance: Legislative staff and controversial donors identified

Investigations into Brazilian political financing for the 2026 elections have revealed several controversial funding sources. Approximately 444 employees from the Chamber of Deputies and the Federal Senate donated roughly R$ 2 million to various campaigns. Of this, R$ 724,000 consisted of direct bank transfers or Pix, while R$ 1.3 million was recorded as estimated donations through voluntary services.

Additionally, reports indicate that candidates, including former First Lady Michelle Bolsonaro and several others, received nearly R$ 840,000 from individuals listed on the ‘Lista Suja’ (Dirty List), a federal registry of employers found to have utilized slave-like labor.

Further scrutiny has identified R$ 61 million in parliamentary amendments paid to companies whose partners had previously donated to the lawmakers directing those funds. Experts have described these patterns as potentially illicit triangular transactions.
