Brazil Performs First Long‑Distance Robotic Cancer Surgery via Telemedicine

Brazil's public health system (SUS) achieved a historic milestone when a patient with rectal cancer was operated on using a robotic system controlled from 2,700 km away. The procedure linked the Hospital do Amor in Porto Velho, Rondônia, with the Hospital do Amor in Barretos, São Paulo. Surgeons on site in Porto Velho prepared the patient and handled the robot’s arms, while specialists in Barretos monitored the operation and took remote control of the instruments in real time.

The connection relied on two independent fiber‑optic links, 5G redundancy and a dedicated VPN, keeping latency under 100 ms to ensure immediate response to the surgeon’s commands. Ministers of Communications and Health observed the surgery, highlighting its potential to reduce regional disparities by bringing advanced oncological care to remote areas. The Ministry of Health plans to expand the technology, estimating that up to 5,000 SUS patients could benefit as the program scales across qualified hospitals.
