Brazil Performs First Robotic Tele‑Surgery to Remove Kidney Tumor

Brazil completed its first robot‑assisted partial nephrectomy performed via tele‑surgery, connecting surgeons in Salvador, Bahia, with a patient in Campo Grande, Mato Grosso do Sul—about 2,380 km apart. The operation used a Starlink satellite link and a Da Vinci‑type surgical robot. It was led by urologist and robotic surgeon Dr Nilo Jorge Leão of the Instituto Brasileiro de Cirurgia Robótica, with local supervision by Dr Bruno Rosa.

The 6.2‑cm renal tumor was removed while preserving the remaining kidney tissue. Officials highlighted the procedure’s benefits, including reduced blood loss, shorter hospital stays, faster recovery and lower risk of complications, underscoring the promise of high‑complexity telemedicine in Brazil and its potential to expand advanced surgical care across remote regions.
