Brazil pet market projected to reach R$ 81 billion by 2026

The Brazilian pet market is projected to reach R$ 81 billion in revenue by 2026, according to a study by the Brazilian Association of Pet Business Companies (Abempet). Brazil currently ranks as the third-largest pet population in the world.

Pet food remains the dominant segment, accounting for 52.8% of total revenue, estimated at R$ 42.9 billion. Other significant sectors include animal sales, projected at R$ 8.9 billion, and veterinary services, expected to reach R$ 8.6 billion. Small and medium-sized pet shops represent the largest sales channel, capturing 48% of the market share.

Within the specialized aquarism niche, an estimated 22.6 million pet fish are expected to be in Brazil in 2024. This segment offers technical business opportunities in equipment, maintenance, water control, and specialized nutrition. Experts note that aquarism requires high technical knowledge, as maintaining these living systems involves complex variables such as filtration, temperature, and species compatibility.
