Brazil's World Cup Elimination Costs Federation $35 Million
Brazil was knocked out in the round of 16 of the 2026 World Cup by Norway, a result that denied the Brazilian Football Confederation (CBF) an estimated $35 million (R$180 million) in prize‑money that would have been awarded for reaching the quarter‑finals. The loss represents the difference between the $15 million awarded for a ninth‑to‑sixteenth finish and the additional $4 million that would have come with a quarter‑final spot.
The CBF’s revenue from twelve major sponsors totals about R$1 billion, a contracted sum that remained unchanged despite the early exit. Sponsor iFood reported that its World Cup campaign reached over 185 million people across 350 posts, but noted that more than half of Brazilians were unaware the company is Brazilian. Only one player, Danilo of Flamengo, returned to Brazil on a charter flight provided by the CBF; the rest of the squad travelled individually. The federation announced that the 26 players will each receive R$1.1 million as a post‑tournament payment.
Overall, the elimination had a sizable financial impact on the federation while leaving its sponsorship income largely intact.
