Brazil poised to become major rare‑earth supplier by 2040

A study titled *Terras Raras no Brasil: Estado da Arte, Cenários e um Mapa do Caminho Estratégico para 2026‑2040* was presented on 1 March at the VII Brazilian Rare‑Earths Seminar (SBTR) in Rio de Janeiro. Commissioned by the Ministry of Science, Technology and Innovation and carried out by the Centro de Gestão e Estudos Estratégicos (CGEE), the research finds that Brazil possesses enough rare‑earth reserves to play a significant role in the global market through 2040. The report stresses that the true economic value lies in downstream activities such as refining and metallurgy, and highlights the strategic importance of Amazonian ion‑exchange clay deposits for long‑term supply.

Minister of Science, Luciana Santos said, “Brazil reúne algumas das maiores reservas minerais do planeta, tem uma base científica consolidada, instituições de excelência e recursos humanos altamente qualificados.” The study outlines a 15‑year roadmap for public‑policy guidance, investment, technological development and institutional coordination, aiming to transform Brazil from a raw‑material exporter into a producer of high‑value rare‑earth products essential for electric vehicles, wind turbines, medical equipment, defense systems and advanced electronics.
