Guarulhos Airport shootout stops attempted cocaine shipment to Europe
On July 31 2026, Brazil’s Federal Police engaged in an armed exchange with a group of suspects near Terminal 3 of Guarulhos International Airport. The suspects, traveling in four vehicles and armed with rifles, tried to place at least nine volumes of cocaine – estimated at around 400 kg – into an aircraft bound for Europe. Police intercepted the operation, seizing five suitcases already loaded onto the plane and four additional boxes abandoned in a nearby area. No injuries or fatalities were reported among police or suspects, and airport landings and take‑offs continued without disruption.
The incident is part of the ongoing Operation Koffer Wechseln, which also led to the temporary arrest of a Guarulhos airport employee on July 30 2026 for alleged involvement in an earlier cocaine shipment of about 27 kg destined for Munich, Germany. Searches for the remaining suspects continue with support from the Military Police, Civil Police, special‑operations units and a police helicopter.
