Brazil police bust OLX fraud network run by Cuiabá family

The Civil Police of Piauí and Mato Grosso launched Operation Falso Elo to dismantle a family‑run criminal organization based in Cuiabá that used the OLX platform to defraud buyers in vehicle transactions. The scheme, known as the “intermediary of sales” fraud, involved manipulating online chats and forging payment documents so victims transferred money to accounts controlled by the group, causing significant financial losses.

On 8 March, police executed 12 search‑and‑seizure warrants in Cuiabá and Barra do Garças, arresting several suspects and confiscating mobile phones and computer equipment. The investigation, led by the Baixa Grande do Ribeiro delegation and supported by intelligence units, identified victims across multiple Brazilian states and abroad. Deputy Marcos Halan said, “The virtual environment is not a territory without law, and Operation Falso Elo shows we can track and dismantle complex criminal groups regardless of where they operate.” The seized devices will be forensic‑examined to locate additional victims and trace the group’s financial flow.
