Rio de Janeiro police operation targets R$ 7.6 billion money laundering scheme
The Federal Police have conducted the eighth phase of Operation Unha e Carne, targeting a criminal organization suspected of laundering money through a network of gas stations in Rio de Janeiro. The investigation alleges that the group used these businesses to facilitate large-scale financial crimes, with Coaf reporting movements exceeding R$ 7.6 billion over the last six years.
Authorities are investigating a scheme involving the leakage of confidential police information to the Comando Vermelho criminal group. This network allegedly included institutional protection and the involvement of public agents. As part of the operation, Minister Alexandre de Moraes ordered the suspension of 112 companies, including 96 gas stations, linked to the laundering scheme.
Several high-profile arrests were made, including elected state deputy Márcio Canella and former Civil Police Secretary Marcus Amim. The Federal Police also identified connections to the PCC through companies acting as financial clearinghouses. The operation involved six arrest warrants and 16 search and seizure warrants across seven municipalities in Rio de Janeiro.
