Brazil police detain suspects after violent attacks in Santa Catarina and Mato Grosso

On July 4‑5, 2026, police in Brazil responded to three separate violent incidents. In the interior of Itapiranga, Santa Catarina, a 50‑year‑old man attempted to set a police officer on fire with gasoline and a lighter, then attacked the crew with a hammer before being restrained and taken to a hospital. No officers were injured.

In Canarana, Mato Grosso, a 19‑year‑old was stopped during a preventive patrol at the Feicam fair, where he tried to flee after police discovered the odor of marijuana. Officers recovered two .22 caliber cartridges in his pocket and located a concealed revolver at his home, leading to his arrest for illegal firearm possession.

In Guaramirim, Santa Catarina, a 32‑year‑old wielding a knife resisted police orders and advanced on officers late on July 5. After physical control techniques and handcuffing, he was taken to the civil police station and released after signing a term of commitment. All three incidents resulted in detentions without injuries to police personnel.
