Brazil police investigate death of teenager after dental care visits

The Civil Police of the Federal District (PCDF) are investigating the death of 15-year-old Maria Luiza Abreu Estevam, who died following multiple visits to the public health system in Sobradinho.

The teenager initially sought medical attention for severe tooth pain. After a dental filling procedure in July, her condition worsened, leading to several visits to a Basic Health Unit and the Sobradinho II Urgent Care Unit (UPA). During her final visit to the UPA on August 12, she presented with nausea, lack of appetite, body aches, and facial tingling. She was subsequently transferred to the Pediatric Intensive Care Unit at the Hospital da Criança de Brasília, where she suffered five cardiac arrests and passed away on August 13.

A report from the Death Verification Service (SVO) indicated that the teenager's condition evolved into generalized infection resulting from dental-origin bacterial endocarditis. Her family is seeking answers regarding whether the medical care provided during her multiple visits was adequate or if negligence occurred.
