Brazil police investigate fatal pitbull attack and animal cruelty case
In Arroio do Sal, Rio Grande do Sul, a 66‑year‑old woman, Rosa Maria Ajala da Silva, was killed after being attacked by a pitbull owned by a man who said he had warned the family not to approach the restrained animal. Police have taken the owner’s statement and are awaiting forensic reports before deciding on possible criminal charges.
In the neighboring municipality of Antônio Olinto, Santa Catarina, two residents were arrested by the Polícia Civil on suspicion of animal cruelty after a pitbull was found severely malnourished and possibly bearing a tumor. The dog was rescued by the NGO 4 Patas and placed under veterinary care while the suspects remain in custody pending further investigation.
