Police officer Carlos Freire Neto killed in Rio de Janeiro shooting
Police civil officer Carlos Alberto Freire Neto, 35, was killed on July 8, 2026 when his unmarked vehicle was ambushed and shot in the North Zone of Rio de Janeiro. The attack took place in the Favela do Muquiço in Guadalupe, an area dominated by the Third Command Pure (TCP) gang. A second police officer was wounded in the leg. In response, hundreds of civil police officers surrounded the favela and two helicopters from the Special Resources Coordination were deployed, but the gunmen fled and have not been apprehended. Acting Governor Ricardo Couto expressed deep sorrow, pledged a thorough investigation and vowed that those responsible will be identified, arrested and prosecuted.
