Brazil political activity: Protests in Recife and Lula's rally in Florianópolis

In Brazil, political tensions are rising ahead of upcoming elections. In Recife, political parties and women's rights organizations, including the PSB, PT, and PCdoB, organized a protest at the Teatro Santa Isabel. The demonstration follows controversial remarks made by Governor Raquel Lyra, who suggested in a 2025 video that a pregnant patient could undergo tubal ligation without her consent. Lyra has since apologized, stating her comments were “equivocada” and did not reflect her respect for women.

Meanwhile, in Florianópolis, President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva held a campaign rally where he advocated for the termination of online betting platforms (“bets”). Lula criticized football club executives who oppose such bans, arguing that sports should not survive at the expense of the poor who already spend money on their teams and stadiums. He indicated intentions to coordinate with the Ministry of Finance and the Central Bank regarding the issue.
