Brazil prepares for electricity market liberalization

The Brazilian electricity sector is preparing for the liberalization of the free energy market, which will eventually allow low-voltage consumers, such as small businesses and residences, to choose their own electricity providers. The transition is expected to occur in stages: industrial and commercial consumers are slated for November 2027, with full residential access expected by November 2028.

Industry leaders emphasize that technology and innovation will be critical to this transition. Armor Energia is accelerating investments in artificial intelligence to analyze consumption profiles and develop personalized pricing mechanisms to manage the scale of millions of new consumers. Similarly, André Millions Coutinho of Thymos Capital noted that while the process has been delayed for decades, the current timing reflects a higher level of market maturity. He highlighted the need for complementary regulations and clearer information to ensure consumers can migrate without confusion.
