Brazil prepares for heavy rains across South, Southeast and Central-West as power firm readies crews

The National Institute of Meteorology (Inmet) forecast intense rain, thunderstorms, strong winds and possible hail for Brazil's South, Southeast and Central‑West regions on Friday and Saturday, with accumulations of up to 60 mm in 24 hours and gusts of 40‑60 km/h. The outlook follows a renewed El Niño signal in the Pacific that is expected to strengthen through the coming months.

Energisa Sul‑Sudeste responded by mobilising additional repair teams and activating its contingency plan ahead of the holiday weekend. The utility urged residents to avoid open areas, stay under shelter during storms, unplug electronic devices, and report downed power lines. It also warned drivers not to stop beneath trees and to remain inside vehicles if a line falls on the car, while offering a 24‑hour hotline for emergencies.
