Brazil President Lula appoints Teresa Leitão as Senate government leader

President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva named Senator Teresa Leitão (PT‑PE) as the new government leader in the Senate on 25 June, after Jaques Wagner (PT‑BA) stepped down following a discussion with Lula and a Federal Police investigation. Leitão, a first‑term senator and head of the Senate Education and Culture Committee, thanked Lula, saying she will act with "loyalty, dialogue, discipline and work."

The PT bench has asked the new leader to convey legislators' concern to Senate President Davi Alcolumbre (União‑Brasil‑AP) about advancing the 6‑by‑1 scale repeal and the PEC da Segurança. The government aims to approve the measures before the parliamentary recess on 18 July, amid tensions stemming from the rejected STF nomination of Jorge Messias and ongoing talks with Alcolumbre.
