Lula urges unity at Ceará PT convention, denounces foreign interference
President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva attended the Workers' Party (PT) state convention in Fortaleza, Ceará on 31 July 2026. In his speech he promoted a “voto casado,” urging voters to support his presidential candidacy together with Governor Elmano de Freitas, who was officially nominated for re‑election. Lula declared, “while I live, the far‑right will not govern Brazil,” and warned against external meddling, naming former U.S. President Donald Trump and Argentine leader Javier Milei as potential supporters of opposition candidates.
He called for expanding universities, federal institutes, engineering, mathematics and artificial‑intelligence education to help Brazil compete with China. Lula also visited the Hospital Universitário do Ceará, criticised the previous government’s handling of the COVID‑19 pandemic – citing roughly 700 000 deaths – and said half of the Senate is “rotten,” urging a stronger governing coalition.
The event gathered more than 20 000 participants, including senators Camilo Santana and Cid Gomes, and marked a key moment in Lula’s 2026 campaign.
