Brazil: President Lula considers dismissing Justice Minister

President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva is reportedly considering the dismissal of Justice and Public Security Minister Wellington César Lima e Silva. The potential decision follows a crisis involving the Supreme Federal Court (STF) and the Director-General of the Federal Police, Andrei Rodrigues. Allies of the president have criticized the minister for being ‘at least omissive’ regarding his role in preventing the potential removal of Rodrigues.

In other legal developments, the Regional Electoral Court of Rio de Janeiro (TRE-RJ) has blocked the candidacy of Anthony Garotinho for governor. The court cited a conviction for administrative improbity during his tenure as government secretary. Additionally, Supreme Court Justice Alexandre de Moraes voted against an appeal to overturn the conviction of former deputy Eduardo Bolsonaro for coercion during legal proceedings, supporting a sentence of over four years in prison.
