Brazil President Lula criticized for controversial statements and staged events

President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva has faced a surge of criticism in Brazil during the first half of 2026. A report by PODER360 counted 19 controversial remarks by Lula in that period, bringing the total of documented gaffes, factual errors and offensive comments to 170 since the start of his third term in 2023.

Columnist Ageisiane Freitas, writing for Revista Oeste, argued that Lula deliberately limits his public appearances to “controlled audiences,” a practice she says has been used for more than a decade. She quoted the columnist saying the president “talks only to controlled audiences” and claimed this reflects “a fear of the streets and a lack of popular support,” citing recent government opinion polls.

Both pieces portray a pattern of Lula managing his image through selective events while contending with increasingly frequent controversial statements.
