Brazil President Lula presses Senate leader Wagner and seeks to mend dialogue with Senate president

President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva asked Senate government leader Jaques Wagner to travel to Brasília for a personal meeting before deciding on a new Senate leadership arrangement. Wagner’s appearance was delayed by a Federal Police investigation into alleged irregularities linked to Banco Master, which he denies. Lula emphasized that Wagner should address the accusations and not leave questions unanswered.

Separately, Senator and former Agriculture Minister Carlos Fávaro said that the strained dialogue between Lula and Senate president Davi Alcolumbre remains blocked after the rejection of the government’s nominee for Attorney‑General Jorge Messias to the Supreme Court. Fávaro expressed confidence that the dispute will be resolved, noting that the impasse is stalling key government proposals such as the work‑hour reduction amendment and a bill on critical minerals.

Both issues highlight ongoing tensions between Brazil’s executive and legislative branches as the country heads toward upcoming elections.
