Brazil President Lula signs law establishing framework for 2027 Women's World Cup

President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva signed Law No. 15.421/2026, setting the legal framework for the FIFA Women’s World Cup to be hosted in Brazil in 2027. The legislation outlines obligations for visas, broadcasting rights, security, marketing, ticket sales, alcohol permissions and the possibility of declaring national or local holidays during matches. It also mandates coordination among federal, state and municipal authorities and adjusts school calendars for the tournament period.

The law earmarks a historic R$ 500,000 payment for each player who represented Brazil in the pioneering women's national teams of 1988 and 1991, with the sums payable to legal heirs for deceased athletes. Earlier, the Senate’s Sports Committee approved the same measure, confirming its provisions before it was published in the Official Gazette. The tournament will be staged in eight Brazilian cities—Belo Horizonte, Brasília, Fortaleza, Porto Alegre, Recife, Rio de Janeiro, Salvador and São Paulo—from 24 June to 25 July, with an expected attendance of over three million spectators.
