Brazil presidential runoff set as Anduril announces Maryland shipyard
Brazil’s presidential election will proceed to a runoff on October 25 after Senator Flávio Bolsonaro and President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva failed to secure a majority in the first round. Bolsonaro received 47.03% of valid ballots (56.1 million votes), while Lula received 45.16% (53.9 million votes). The election saw a significant abstention rate of 21.08%, the highest in 28 years.
In the United States, defense technology firm Anduril has announced plans to invest $3.7 billion to build a 2-million-square-foot shipyard at Sparrows Point in Baltimore County, Maryland. Named Arsenal-2, the facility will manufacture components for U.S. Navy submarines, such as torpedo tubes for Virginia-class attack submarines. The project, supported by a Navy contract worth up to $2.9 billion, is projected to create over 3,100 permanent jobs.
