Brazil private health insurance market dominated by corporate plans
Data from the National Supplementary Health Agency (ANS) indicates that corporate health plans now account for 73.1% of the private medical assistance market in Brazil, up from 72.2% in the previous twelve months ending March 2026. As of June 2026, medical assistance plans totaled 53,145,666 links, while exclusively dental plans reached 36,711,046.
To support consumer autonomy, the ANS guarantees the right to grace period portability. This allows beneficiaries to switch between health plans—whether with the same or a different provider—without having to re-fulfill waiting periods for procedures like hospitalization or childbirth.
This portability is subject to specific rules and time windows. The primary window opens after a minimum period of stay in the original plan and lasts for 120 days starting from the contract's anniversary month. Special portability may be available in cases such as provider bankruptcy or the cancellation of collective contracts.
