Brazil projected to become world's 8th largest economy by 2027

According to the International Monetary Fund (IMF) World Economic Outlook, Brazil is projected to return to its position as the world's eighth-largest economy by 2027. This would see the nation surpass Italy and Russia in nominal GDP rankings.

Projections indicate that Brazil's GDP will reach approximately US$ 2.8 trillion in 2027. Before this ascent, the country is expected to occupy the tenth position in 2026 with an estimated GDP of US$ 2.655 trillion. The IMF suggests this eighth-place ranking could be maintained through 2031.

While the ranking shows an upward trend, the IMF has also revised Brazil's growth forecasts downward, projecting 2.2% growth in 2026 and 1.9% in 2027. Experts note that because these rankings are measured in US dollars, the results are heavily influenced by exchange rates and the relative economic performance of other nations.

On a global scale, the United States and China are expected to maintain their lead as the top two economies. Other notable shifts include India, which is projected to rise to the fourth largest economy by 2027, overtaking the United Kingdom and Japan.
