Brazil implements rights and protections for elderly and disabled citizens

Brazil is advancing several legislative and social initiatives to protect the rights of elderly citizens and people with disabilities. In the context of upcoming elections, the Electoral Justice system has established specific accessibility protocols. These include the appointment of accessibility coordinators at polling stations, the provision of barrier-free infrastructure, and the implementation of priority queuing. Notably, voters over 80 years of age are granted 'super-priority' status.

On the legislative front, Bill 3250/26 proposes the creation of a National Network for the Protection and Defense of the Human Rights of the Elderly. This initiative aims to foster cooperation between federal, state, and municipal governments to ensure long-term, legally binding protections for an aging population. Projections from IBGE suggest that by 2050, Brazil will have 73 million people aged 60 or older.

Additionally, various regional efforts are underway, including public hearings in Goiás to discuss social participation and seminars in Itabira to promote dignified aging. Local initiatives also focus on consumer protection, such as lectures in Recife designed to prevent fraud and scams targeting the elderly.
