Brazil proposes paid leave for two annual blood donations

A bill (Project of Law 2520/2026) introduced by federal deputy Dr. Luizinho (PP‑RJ) would amend Brazil's Consolidated Labor Laws (CLT) to allow workers to miss work twice a year – one day every six months – to donate blood without loss of pay, provided they present proof of donation. "The concession of paid absence in semi‑annual intervals has the potential to increase regular donor adherence, contributing to greater predictability and safety of hemotherapy stocks," the deputy said.

The measure seeks to boost regular blood donations and stabilize supplies for the public health system (SUS), which requires about 5,000 units of blood daily. Around 1.4% of Brazilians currently donate, within the World Health Organization's recommended 1‑3% range, but stock levels fluctuate seasonally.

The proposal has been granted urgency, allowing a direct vote in the Chamber of Deputies without prior committee review. It will still need Senate approval before becoming law.
