Brazil proposes Proleite program to support dairy farmers

A new bill, PL 2978/26, has been introduced in the Brazilian Chamber of Deputies to establish the Federal Program for the Valorization of Dairy Farming, known as Proleite. Proposed by Deputy José Medeiros, the initiative aims to support small and medium-sized rural producers by fostering a more competitive and sustainable dairy production chain.

The program proposes several key measures, including subsidized rural credit lines, economic subsidies, specialized technical assistance, and rural extension services. It also seeks to promote technological innovation, herd genetic improvement, and the development of local agro-industries to increase the value of dairy derivatives.

To stimulate demand, the bill suggests including milk and dairy products in school meal programs and food security policies, alongside institutional campaigns to encourage consumption. The proposal also prioritizes government procurement of national dairy products. The bill is currently undergoing analysis by various parliamentary committees, including the Committees on Constitution, Justice and Citizenship, and Agriculture, Livestock, Supply, and Rural Development.
