Brazilian celebrities face public pressure to declare political stances
Public figures in Brazil are facing increasing pressure from social media users to declare their political affiliations and stances regarding the presidential elections. This phenomenon, described by some as a 'political psychosis,' involves netizens targeting celebrities and influencers who remain neutral, often labeling them as 'isentões' (those who avoid taking sides).
Actress Cacau Protásio recently addressed the issue after receiving comments regarding her choice of clothing, stating that she does not intend to use her social media to discuss politics and will not reveal her vote. Similarly, Ary Mirelle, wife of singer João Gomes, defended her husband against demands for political positioning, noting that the family has faced threats against their children due to political tensions.
Other public figures, including Luana Piovani, have engaged in direct confrontations with politicians. Piovani recently made a private exchange with newly elected federal deputy Lucas Pavanato public after he requested she stop mentioning him on social media. The mobilization to identify the political leanings of celebrities has also taken regional forms, with specific scrutiny directed at artists from the Northeast of Brazil.
