Brazil ranks second in imports of EU-prohibited pesticides, Oxfam report

An Oxfam report released on World Food Day reveals that the European Union continues to manufacture and export pesticides that are deemed too toxic for use within the EU. In 2024, EU member states exported nearly 122,000 tons of these prohibited substances, a volume that has more than doubled since 2018.

Brazil has emerged as the second-largest importer of these prohibited pesticides, receiving approximately 15,000 tons in 2024, trailing only the United States. The report highlights that 93 countries import these dangerous chemicals from the EU, with 75% being low- and middle-income nations in the Global South. Oxfam describes the EU's regulatory approach as having colonial characteristics, as it protects its own population and environment while allowing the export of hazardous substances to regions with weaker regulatory frameworks.

In Brazil, highly dangerous pesticides (AAPs) account for nearly half of all pesticides sold. Notably, six of the ten most sold pesticides in the country are banned in the EU. The report also notes a high concentration of market power, with four corporations controlling 61% of the global pesticide sector, generating approximately 2.7 billion euros from the sale of highly hazardous products.
