Brazil readies 2026 election voting systems: e-Title outage and biometric fallback

The Electoral Justice of the Brazilian state of Tocantins scheduled a maintenance window for its digital services on Friday 31 May from 20:00 until 01:00 Saturday. During this period the National Civil Identification (ICN) system and the e‑Title mobile application, along with related platforms such as Título Net, CANDex, Contas Mais JE, Filia, ELO, and Pardal, will be unavailable or experience limited functionality. The update is intended to strengthen security and stability ahead of the 2026 elections.

The Superior Electoral Court (TSE) clarified that biometric identification will remain mandatory at voting stations, but voters whose fingerprint is not recognized can still cast their ballot. The procedure allows up to four additional fingerprint reads; if unsuccessful, election officials will verify the voter’s birth year against the electoral register and, upon confirmation, permit voting. Voters without registered biometrics may vote using a photo ID or the e‑Title app, after which they are urged to update their biometric data with the Electoral Justice.

These measures aim to ensure uninterrupted voting access while reinforcing electoral security for the upcoming 2026 general election.
