Brazil real estate: Residents seek smaller cities for quality of life
Surveys indicate a growing trend among Brazilians to move from large urban centers to smaller cities in search of a better quality of life. According to research by DataZAP, a division of Grupo OLX, 65% of real estate-interested individuals would consider relocating to smaller municipalities. Among those currently living in capital cities, 60% expressed openness to such a move.
The desire to relocate is particularly strong among prospective homebuyers, with 70% considering the change, compared to 63% of those looking to rent. However, financial stability remains a priority, as 55% of respondents stated they would not accept a reduction in income to achieve a higher quality of life.
Additional data from the Viver nas Cidades 2026 study, conducted by the Instituto Cidades Sustentáveis and Ipsos-Ipec, highlights dissatisfaction in major hubs. The study found that 67% of residents in São Paulo, 68% in Rio de Janeiro, 65% in Porto Alegre, and 63% in Recife would leave their current cities if given the opportunity. Cities like Maringá in Paraná are noted for having favorable social and urban indicators that attract interest in this shifting residential landscape.
