Argentina‑Brazil diplomatic row after Milei’s insults to Lula
Argentine President Javier Milei criticised Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva and Supreme Court Justice Alexandre de Moraes during a liberal party event in São Paulo, calling Lula a “thief” and “prisoner” and labeling the judge “bald trash”. Milei also claimed that Brazil funded 25 % of an “anti‑Argentina campaign” and alleged involvement of Mexico and the U.S. Democratic Party. In response, Brazil’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs summoned Argentine ambassador Daniel Raimondi for explanations and placed its own ambassador Julio Bitelli on consultation in Brasília – a diplomatic measure described as the most serious bilateral dispute in decades. Argentine Governor Axel Kicillof warned that Milei’s remarks could jeopardise trade and investment between the neighbours, while Brazil’s Finance Minister Dario Durigan called Milei a “clown”. Mexico’s President Claudia Sheinbaum denied any Mexican campaign against Argentina.
