Brazil recognizes family tradition circus as cultural heritage

The family tradition circus has been officially recognized as a Cultural Heritage of Brazil. This designation was approved by the Advisory Council of Cultural Heritage, the highest decision-making body of the National Institute of Historic and Artistic Heritage (Iphan), resulting in its inclusion in the Register of Forms of Expression.

This recognition follows a 21-year process involving circus families, researchers, and public institutions. The tradition is characterized by multi-generational knowledge transfer, where skills in performance, tent assembly, and show production are passed down orally through families, sometimes spanning up to eight generations.

Historically, circus arts in Brazil date back to at least 1727, with modern influences arriving from foreign companies in the 19th century. Today, the circus serves as a vital medium for cultural identity, evolving from traditional traveling shows into educational and artistic experiences that emphasize inclusivity and community interaction.
