Brazil records 7.6 million speeding violations in two months
Brazil recorded over 7.6 million speeding violations during the months of January and February 2026, according to data from the National Registry of Traffic Infractions (Renainf) and the National Traffic Secretariat (Senatran). These speeding citations accounted for nearly half of the 15.9 million total traffic infractions documented during that period.
Traffic authorities emphasize that excessive speed significantly impacts driver reaction times and increases the distance traveled before a vehicle can stop. High speeds also increase the kinetic energy involved in collisions, leading to more severe outcomes. Data from the World Health Organization indicates that every 1% increase in average speed is associated with a 4% increase in the risk of a fatal accident and a 3% increase in the risk of a serious accident.
In addition to speeding, hundreds of thousands of records also cited mobile phone use while driving and failure to wear seatbelts as major safety concerns.
