Brazil elderly voter abstention drops in 2026 first round

In the first round of the 2026 elections in Brazil, voter abstention among citizens aged 70 and older fell by 9.7 percentage points, dropping from 58.8% in 2022 to 49.1%. This increase in participation occurred despite the expansion of this demographic, which grew from 14.9 million to 17.2 million eligible voters.

Data from the Superior Electoral Court (TSE) shows that while the general abstention rate in the country was 21.08%, certain groups saw improved engagement. Specifically, abstention decreased among voters under 18, the elderly, and those with lower levels of formal education. Conversely, abstention rose among voters aged 21 to 24.

The Movimento Voto 70+ noted that while participation is rising, elderly voters still face significant barriers, including physical mobility issues and low political self-esteem. The movement is launching the ‘Vovó Vota’ campaign to encourage female elderly participation in the second round. Additionally, voting can serve as an automatic ‘proof of life’ for INSS retirees and pensioners.
