Brazil returns to external debtor status after 19 years

Brazil has transitioned from a net external creditor to a net debtor for the first time in 19 years. According to Central Bank data, the country's external debt reached US$ 407.1 billion in June, surpassing international reserves, which stand at US$ 402 billion. This shift resulted in a net external debt of US$ 5.1 billion.

The increase in debt is attributed to the fact that external debt grew by 27.4% during the current administration, while reserves increased by 15.8%. A significant factor is the widening current account deficit, which reached US$ 67.4 billion in 2024, more than double the 2023 figure. This deficit is driven by increased spending on imported services, cryptocurrency investments, and interest payments to international creditors.

Despite the change, economists and rating agencies do not currently view this as an imminent crisis. The net external debt represents less than 0.3% of Brazil's GDP, and reserves cover more than three times the short-term debt maturities. The National Treasury intends to gradually increase the share of foreign currency in federal public debt from under 4% to 7% as market conditions allow.
